Immersion: Soundtracks for Sea Life (Apr 13, 6 pm)

I'm curating a concert at the Birch Aquarium, part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, this weekend, as part of SpringFest, the UCSD Music department's annual graduate student-run festival.  The show is Sunday, April 13th, from 6-8 pm.

Thanks to SpringFest head coordinators Caroline Miller and Adam Tinkle, the Aquarium event and SpringFest as a whole has received a much higher amount of press attention this year, compared to years past.  The diversity of the headlines is interesting:

KPBS: Birch Aquarium Event Brings Together Music And Sea Life

La Jolla Light: Budding musicians plant seeds for SpringFest 2014 at UCSD

San Diego City Beat: SpringFest: Experiments in Music, Art Alive and Giving the Finger: Risking it All to Fish the World's Deadliest Sea

San Diego Reader: UCSD Music SpringFest 2014

This concert will also feature the premiere of my generative audio-visual work, Sounding Orbs (2014).

Join the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego for a special evening under the sea featuring musical performances from UCSD music graduate students, part of SpringFest: Experiments in Music. On April 13 from 6 – 8 p.m., visitors can stroll through the aquarium and encounter live and recorded pieces written by musicians specifically for this unique event.

New at Springfest this year is a youth showcase in collaboration with A Reason To Survive (ARTS), a local nonprofit that uses art as a vehicle to create positive, long-lasting transformation in children and youth facing major life challenges. “A group of talented young artists visited Birch Aquarium and were challenged to think about how to ‘soundtrack’ a tank in the Hall of Fishes,” said Adam Tinkle, UCSD music graduate student and ARTS instructor. Guests at the April 13 event will use headphones in the Hall of FIshes to listen to the finished pieces while viewing the animals that inspired the young composer.

The musical event will feature different genres of music performed throughout the aquarium. Guests can enjoy electroacoustic performances within the Hall of Fishes, contemporary classical melodies in front of the centerpiece two-story kelp forest tank, improvisational music in the Smargon Courtyard, and American folk performances on the Tide-Pool Plaza.

“As a part of UC San Diego, Birch Aquarium at Scripps is thrilled to be collaborating again with another campus department on such a unique event. UCSD has a proud history of integrating artistic and scientific methods of experiencing the world,” said Nigella Hillgarth, Birch Aquarium at Scripps executive director.

The event is $10 for the public and $8 for aquarium members and UCSD students (with ID). Tickets may be purchased online at aquarium.ucsd.edu or by calling 858-534-5771.
